It really should come as no surprise anymore, but ‘The Twilight Saga’ has done it again. With five wins, including Best Movie, the 2011 MTV Movie Awards marked the third year that the infamous vampire love story has swept all of the major awards handed out during the festivities.
On a stage straight out of Wonderland, actors and actresses alike gathered to pass out and receive the coveted golden popcorn buckets, awarded based on votes straight from the fans themselves.
Hosted by Jason Sudeikis, a veteran SNL member and comedic performer, the two-hour program opened with a classic sketch involving Sudeikis and Twilight star Taylor Lautner, among others. Playing off several of the year’s biggest and most anticipated films, including ‘The Hangover Part II,’ ‘Black Swan’ and (of course) ‘The Twilight Sage: Eclipse,’ the opening provided a comedic segue for the event.
Sadly, the rest of the night did not follow in the opening’s footsteps. Sudeikis, generally a natural when it comes to one-liners and funny quips, fell upon deaf ears for several of his jokes. Especially those involving former governor Arnold Schwarzeneggar and Maria Shriver. This, combined with several awkward onstage moments, only served to garner a few meager chuckles from the otherwise stoic crowd.
Not to say that the awards did not have their moments.
A definite crowd favorite came with the announcement of Twilight’s Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson winning the award for Best Kiss. A tradition goes, the winners are (obviously) expected to kiss one another as part of their acceptance, but the real-life couple have never been a pair for following tradition. Just like the past two MTV Movie Awards, Pattinson and Stewart withheld a kiss themselves, and instead the Twilight hunk charged into the audience seeking out co-star Lautner. There, the two proceeded to share their own celebratory kiss. (Cue delighted preteen squeals everywhere.)
Other jaw dropping moments of the night included Justin Timberlake and Mila Kunis sharing what some would call “intimate touches,” before presenting the award for Best Male Performance, and Jim Carrey introducing The Foo Fighters while wearing a suit that electronically changed the images shown on its surface, including that of a humping dog.
My favorite award of the night was (and always will be) the Generation Award. This year’s recipient, Reese Witherspoon, was honored by Pattinson, along with former co-star Patrick Dempsey and friend Chelsea Handler. There were laughs, a few awkwardly placed jokes, and a large amount of respect dished out during the presentation of the award along with a memorable montage of Witherspoon’s past acting endeavors.
“I just wanna say to all the girls out there that… it’s possible to make it in Hollywood without a reality show,” Witherspoon said during her acceptance speech.
So, what were your favorite moments from the 2011 MTV Movie Awards? Did you find all of the wins were deserved, or were others more deserving?
