My Summer Playlist – 2011 Style

When it comes to summer, there is not much that I enjoy. I hate hot weather, I can’t stand the blazing sun, and I most definitely dislike the fact that I have no air conditioning. If it were up to me, I would probably live in a cave for the rest of my life.

But despite all of its negative aspects, there is one thing that I find enjoyable about summer. I love picking out a new playlist to blast while I am driving down the country roads I grew up on with the windows down and my sunglasses on. The music does not necessarily have to be current Top 100 material or new, for that matter. It just has to be fresh and exciting to me. Something I have not spent my entire nine months in college listening to on repeat.

Some of the music comes from the radio, and others from my favorite TV shows, but a vast majority of the music I listen to for the summer comes from the various bloggers I follow who throw out a sample song. And because these bloggers helped me find music that I really enjoy and find interesting, I wanted to share with everyone here in the hopes that someone will find the songs to be as fun as I do.

Anna Sun – Walk The Moon

I found this song on the blog from one of my friends from school, MuffinPuddles, and I fell in love with the song as soon as it started playing. There is just something about the fun beat, the catchy lyrics, and the hilariously upbeat video that draws me in and makes me think of lazy summer days spent jumping around and having a good time with friends. Plus, the fun paint scene at the end of the video looks like a really good time. I dare you to not tap your toes or nod your head along with the beat.

Tonight Tonight – Hot Chelle Rae

A good friend from high school (who shares a similar music taste as I do)  posted this song on my Facebook wall a couple of months ago with a simple note that said, “Have fun.” I will admit that I had heard of neither the band or the song before that moment, but I was more than willing to give the tune a shot. And now that I have, the upbeat song has become one of the anthems of my summer, always putting a smile on my face despite the oppressing heat.

Honey Bee – Blake Shelton

I will be the first to admit that I have a huge (probably unhealthy) crush on this country cutie. And it is almost a guarantee that at least one of his songs will be on my summer playlist. This year’s choice was “Honey Bee,” his catchy, sweet and almost unbearably cute tune. The song made waves on country radio, and I decided it needed to be a staple of my summer after I watched the video premiere during NBC’s The Voice.

My Body – Young the Giant

Thank God for free weekly downloads on iTunes. If the company did not provide those, I never would have found this fun, quick tempo song to listen to while I mow the lawn. The tune definitely makes the time fly by, and it helps to drown out the monotonous sounds of a John Deere’s engine.

Lay Down – Priestess

Okay, so this song is completely different from all the others, I know. But during the summer when I am driving down the road, my favorite kind of music to have blasting from the speakers is rock. Classic or modern, it doesn’t matter in the slightest. As long as it has lots of guitars and drums, I am happy. There were way to many of my favorites to pick from when it came to this category, so I chose the song that had the most plays on my iTunes.

Obviously, these are not the only songs that I am listening to this summer. In fact, I have probably come across a hundred songs and made twenty CDs for my truck already. And it is only the end of June. But these were among my most played so far, so I figured they were good enough choices.

So what about you? Are there any songs that you are totally loving this summer, or are you relying on old favorites form the fall to get you through these hot and grueling months?
